Milky Way with Cloudy Sky
This panoramic image of the night sky above the canyon was made over several hours from a location near Pulpit Rock. Besides the Milky Way, the sky had a lot of air glow along the horizon on this night. This naturally occurring phenomenon is the result of sunlight-induced chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere and can be many different colors. This is a very special image for several reasons. The entire span of the Milky Way over the canyon in this position can only be captured in springtime for just a few weeks. There must be no moon in the sky to compromise the darkness, which further limits the timing, and the sky must be mostly clear. Here, the sky has some clouds mixing with the airglow to give a very unique color palette and a truly memorable scene. Published in Sky&Telescope magazine.
