Canyon Diversity

A huge variety of natural features is on display in this early autumn view of the inner canyon. The Gunnison River reflects the morning light, which has lit the grasses and aspen growing along the banks. Further up the slope the ground is covered with low-growing species of oak and shrubs. The rugged rock walls show the vertical pegmatite dikes within the dark gneiss and shist and the tops of the rocky formations in the foreground surprizingly support more trees and shrubs, all in brilliant fall colors.
