Rainbow Sky over Dragon Point

There are actually two rainbows in the sky here, one is the arc of the Milky Way and one is the beautiful rainbow of colors hovering just above the landscape. This is a very complex composite image. It is a two-row 360-degree panorama showing not only the beautiful landscape around Dragon Point but the entire sky along the horizon. The canyon itself is striking in its own way. The Gunnison River flows through the canyon here 2,250 feet below the rim with Painted Wall, Colorado’s highest cliff, taking up the center of the photograph. The Milky Way on the right side of the picture is present in its entirety. It has been colored by the intense airglow. For example, part of the arc is blue, the result of light emitted by altered oxygen. Airglow is light given off by molecules in the upper atmosphere that have undergone solar-induced reactions during the daytime. At night, light is emitted as the molecules return to their normal state. All the colors are accounted for here. Oxygen emits green, red and blue. Sulfur glows yellow and the hydroxyl radical also emits red light. There also can be mixtures of these colors resulting in other hues. Truly a unique Rainbow Sky.

The matted prints are signed on the print border so the signature will stay with the print if you ever change the mat. The framed pieces use a solid wood frame painted black with the wood grain showing through. The glazing is non-glare Acrylite, an art grade acrylic that is safe to ship. The prints themselves are made using the highest quality pigment inks and are guaranteed for life if displayed out of direct sunlight.
