Summer Milky Way over Painted Wall
This image was extremely challenging to capture. It is a panorama showing the entire span of the Milky Way over Black Canyon at Painted Wall. The Milky Way is almost directly overhead at this time of year, so a very wide-angle lens was used. The Andromeda Galaxy can be seen at the right and the California Nebula is at the lower right in the sky. The North America Nebula is at the center. These red areas are ionized hydrogen and are where stars are being formed.
