Milky Way and Planets over Tomichi

Jupiter, Saturn and Mars line up in a neat row from right to left as they rise above the horizon under a bright Milky Way. The Andromeda Galaxy also can be seen on the left. It is the farthest object that can be seen with the naked eye. It is the companion galaxy to ours and lies 2.5 million light years away. In springtime, the Milky Way is low enough in the sky to be captured in its entirety over the canyon at Tomichi Point. The canyon below displays a complimentary arc of its own with a perfectly placed line of colorful bushes that complete the composition. On this particular night the sky is stained red by intense airglow, a naturally-occurring phenomenon invisible to the unaided eye. The red is from oxygen and hydroxyl radicals present in the upper atmosphere that have been chemically altered during solar-induced reactions during the day. Light is emitted as the molecules return to their normal state in the absence of the sun. Airglow can also be yellow (sulfur), green and blue (oxygen) and mixtures of these colors.

The matted prints are signed on the print border so the signature will stay with the print if you ever change the mat. The prints themselves are made using the highest quality pigment inks and are guaranteed for life if displayed out of direct sunlight.
