Mystic Falls is a little-known multi-tiered cascade hidden in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. It isn't easy to reach and requires navigating some pretty steep terrain on the descent into the canyon. The banks are very treacherous with slippery rocks and the prospect of a fall into the river is ever present. The effort is well worth it. Summer brings the beautiful greens to various species of trees and shrubs growing in the canyon. The colorful rocks are more exposed than in the springtime when the torrential flow from the snowmelt largely obscures everything under several feet of water. This image represents the colors and textures of summer in the canyon. The San Miguel River is still flowing quite fast and the smaller cascades lend a sense of the power to the flowing water. I wanted to convey this power in the image by choosing a rather fast shutter speed so that the water, especially in the foreground, wouldn't be too silky smooth but more agitated. I cropped this image to a square format to concentrate more attention on the river. The falls itself is partially hidden from view, which adds a bit more mystery to Mystic Falls.
